At On Air Design, we do more than just wallpaper and signage. One of our most utilized capabilities is fabricating faux surfaces—especially faux tile. We can create faux tile to suit any set decorating need, from flooring and backsplash to vintage linoleum and small hexagonal tiles.
We have an extensive library of material substrates to choose from when printing faux tile and a portfolio of capabilities to achieve the desired effect. Vinyl adhesive or wallpaper works like a charm for vertical surfaces like kitchen backsplashes or subway tiles. Vinyl adhesive allows for quick, temporary installation, while wallpaper can be more permanent. Sintra is ideal if realistic grout lines are required. We can use our CNC router to route the lines to be grouted on set.
Linoleum or MDF are best for flooring. Linoleum works best if a floor has already been built on the set, and the printed linoleum can be applied on top of it. If the set doesn’t have a floor yet, MDF can be printed and routed for a realistic tile effect and used to build the floor.
Depending on the material and the degree of realism required, we have some options for creating the perfect faux tile look. On flat, roll-to-roll substrates (like vinyl adhesive or paper), we can print the tiles with faux shading on the grout lines for the visual illusion of depth. These materials are compatible with our new spot gloss printing technology, which allows us to apply a glossy varnish to any part of the print. This can be applied across the whole print or used strategically– for example, only applying the gloss to the “tiles” and leaving the “grout lines” matte. When printing on thicker, rigid substrates (like MDF or Sintra), we can print the tile pattern directly on the material using one of our large-format flatbed printers and then route the grout lines for dimension.
